When Charley Met Granpa

By Amy Hest

Illustrated by Helen Oxenbury

Dear Granpa ... When are you coming to see Charley? Bring a big suitcase and stay a long time and I'll meet you at the station...

Readers fell in love with Henry and his truly adorable new puppy, Charley, in Charley's First Night. In this beautiful follow-up title, Henry hopes – very much – that his granpa, who is coming for a visit, will love Charley just as much as he does (a LOT). But Granpa is a little wary of dogs ... he's never been friends with one before. Luckily, Charley isn't any ordinary little puppy, he's a very smart one and this could be the beginning of a very beautiful friendship indeed...

Reviews

'Lyrically portrayed through both words and pictures. Told from Henry’s viewpoint, Hest’s attention to detail in her narrative has a child-like simplicity while at the same time capturing the warmth between the characters. Oxenbury’s gorgeous illustrations too, glow with warmth despite the chilly landscape and as always, her attention to detail is impeccable' Red Riding Hub

'A charming, epistolary Winter’s Tale. Henry writes to his grandfather informing him of the existence of Charley, a puppy eccentrically possessed of a surname: ‘the same last name as me, Korn’. Oxenbury’s familiar style is reassuring. There is order to her universe, even with a paper-shredding puppy thrown in. Granpa writes back from a book-lined study, hinting at his ambivalence about dogs. But when Granpa visits in deep snow, Charley’s retrieval of his flyaway hat redeems all. An affectionate and anything but bleak mid-winter pick-me-up.' Guardian

'Helen Oxenbury’s delightful watercolour illustrations add warmth and charm' Carousel
