I worked as a teacher for several years in London, near Heathrow; the school was basically at the end of the runway and occasionally the planes made more noise than the children did. After teaching I worked as a taxi-driver. It involved more driving but fewer children. I wrote an article for the Guardian in 2005 about life as a single father which was picked up by Eve magazine for a follow-up piece about dating.
